Church Purpose and Values

Believing that an anxious world needs to hear the Good News of the Gospel, we worship as a central act of our faith at an 8:30 and 11:00 service each Sunday with monthly observance of the Lord’s Supper. The 8:30 service is held on Ocean Isle Beach during the tourist season, seeking to extend the Word to vacationers and church members. A new CD ministry makes it possible for the sick to participate in the worship service.

Believing that suffering people need the Church’s ministries of mercy and compassion, we provide mission programs including financial and volunteer support of the Brunswick County Food Bank. We offer a church school class for mentally challenged adults from a local Group Home. Shallotte Presbyterian participates in numerous denominational offerings. Important to the life of the congregation is the prayer chain, the parish/shepherd program and regular visitation. In 2005, we will be actively involved in a Mission Trip to Mexico.

Believing that children, youth, adults and families need the spiritual nurture and fellowship of the church, we offer active Christian Education and fellowship programs for all ages. In addition to the Presbyterian Women’s group, opportunities are offered through the Presbyterian Men and a 55 Plus Focus Group. There is a commitment to fulfilling our baptismal vows through initiating and supporting programs to nurture children and youth of the church. Recently, a class on worship was initiated for our youth leading up to Youth Sunday.

Shallotte Presbyterian Church Mission Statement

As a friendly, loving and caring church,

  • we demonstrate our love and obedience to God;

  • we joyfully share our time and talents as we bear witness to Christ through word and deed; and

  • we strive to witness by being a strong example for Jesus Christ in our community and the world.

Recent History:

One recent accomplishment in the church was the building of the new sanctuary and the expansion of the education wing. The on-going retirement of the mortgage for this building program is far ahead of projections.

The Beach Worship Ministry, which began in 1966, continues to thrive with active participation in the planning/support of this summer program on Ocean Isle Beach, by over 30 members of our congregation.

Sunday worship services are traditional, warm and inviting.

The Christian Education program offers high quality studies for all ages. An ecumenical Vacation Bible School has been well attended and continues to have the support and input of the three churches involved.

The Presbyterian Women have three active circles and many mission projects. The Presbyterian Men actively assist with church building and grounds beautification and service projects. There is a 55 Plus Focus Group that socializes through monthly dinners with about 30 attending.

About the membership:

A large percentage of the membership is well-educated, though we represent diverse backgrounds, age groups, and talents. The congregation consists of working professionals, managers, builders, realtors, doctors, lawyers, educators, business owners, merchants, politicians, government employees and wage earners. This community attracts a number of retirees who relocate to the area bringing a wealth of experience and skills to the congregation.

In addition, the number of families with children among the church adds a dimension of vitality and opportunity. The gifts and talents of many people contribute to the strong music program which brings the word of God to us through song and enriches the worship. The Music Director has led symphonies in three states.

The Church is blessed with some very talented and dedicated teachers and Bible Study leaders. Also, the church is grateful to have several retired Presbyterian ministers involved. Rev. Dan Norman retired from this pastorate in 1990 and serves as our Pastor Emeritus.

Regular volunteers are committed to the important Beach Ministry, Christian Education opportunities, and Session committees. Our church hosts a well attended ecumenical Vacation Bible School.
