InterChurch Food Pantry: The Interchurch Council operates a food
pantry each Saturday of the year to supplement the County Family Assistance
Agency food stamp program. SPC operates and pays costs for this pantry 4
months of the year. We supply volunteers, purchase food that is to be
distributed and solicit donations of meats, frozen food products, bread and
cakes from the grocery stores in the area. In addition, for their designated
Saturdays, SPC arranges to pick up food from the central food pantry
warehouse in Wilmington. An average month the food pantry will serve about
800 to 900 individuals whose ages range from birth to 55+.
Reynoso, Mexico Mission Project: SPC, in conjunction with Fayetteville’s
Highland Presbyterian, raise funds and
send approximately 14 people on a one week mission trip to Reynoso, Mexico.
The Men of the Church raise money for this trip by donations and a golf
outing. During 2005 our church sent 12 members ranging in age from 14 to
55+.. Each participant pays a portion of their expenses with the Church
providing scholarships and covering the balance of expenses for Members and
other interested people who would like to make the Mission trip. The group
operates a dental clinic and works to construct a dwelling for a Reynoso
family during their week long mission project. .
Presbyterian Counseling Center: Each
year financial support for the Counseling Center, located in Wilmington, is
put into our budget. In addition a 3 year pledge is being paid to the
Counseling Center to assist in financing a satellite office in Brunswick
County.
Meals for Shut-ins: The Women of the Church operate a program for
delivering prepared meals to shut-in members. This is a volunteer program
and is operated by Church members who donate a prepared dish and deliver the
meals to individuals in need of the service.
Communities in Schools: SPC supports the
Communities in Schools
program through a sub-committee of the Missions and Benevolences committee. SPC has a contract with one of our local schools to assist the CIS program
with the items needed by Teachers and Students to improve conditions or
provide recreation.
Local Group Home for mentally challenged: SPC operates a
special Sunday School class for members of a local Group Home. Mentally
Challenged members of this class are given special attention and attend part
of the Morning Worship service as a group. They are instructed in reverence
during worship and given the opportunity to express themselves through
Sunday school work.
Pastor’s Discretionary Fund: SPC budgets an amount each year for
disbursement at his/her discretion to people in need of emergency funds. At
times this fund is used to pay for heat or transportation
Sermon Recording: SPC operates as a mission project service
to shut-ins by recording the Sunday morning Worship services. The recordings
are transferred to CDs. Small CD players are provided to anyone needing them
and the recordings are delivered to shut-in members weekly so that they may
enjoy the services. After their use by shut-in members, the recordings are
placed in the library for use by anyone desiring to check them out.
